    AP ENGLISH: LITERATURE & COMPOSITION

    AP English Literature engages students in critical reading and analysis of fiction, drama and poetry. Through their reading of both British and American works of literature, students deepen their understanding of how authors use language to create meaning. Writing assignments focus primarily on analysis of selected readings as students learn to examine literature from many angles and to express their ideas clearly and creatively. This course will prepare students to take the AP Literature Advanced Placement Exam. A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the exam enables the student to receive English credits from most colleges and universities.

    ENGLISH 9 LAB

    English 9 Lab is a course designed to help students become more successful in 9th grade and beyond. English 9 Lab supports students in English 9 by working to preview and review content and skills being presented in the CP English 9 courses. It also supports students generally by focusing on skills necessary for success in all academic courses such as reading comprehension, writing and organization.

    ELD English 1&2 is designed for beginning-level English Learners (EL). This course emphasizes oral language skills and vocabulary developments combined with the study of beginning-level reading in English.

  • Speech and Debate 2

    Speech and Debate 2

    Open to Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
    Prerequisite (with some exceptions): C or better in the beginning course, Speech & Debate

    Offered in the Fall only, this class is designed to provide direct instruction in competitive speech and/or drama events and debate. The variety of competition offerings allows for students with diverse interests/skills to discover the events with which they are compatible. Students who take Competitive Forensics enjoy performing. This course is devoted to competition preparation and is structured according to speaking events officially recognized by the Speech and Debate Association. Students do extensive research and are required to attend and participate in events held outside of school hours. This course is offered to freshmen through seniors, after successful completion of the Basic Speech/Debate course.

    Two exceptions: the prerequisite course is waived for freshman – all other grade-levels interested in joining without first enrolling in the beginning speech and debate course must apply for a waiver through the instructor.

    AP ENGLISH: LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION

    Students in this course will develop flexibility and skill in a variety of writing modes, which can be applied in all subject areas in college, as well as in personal and professional situations. Writing will focus on narration, exposition, and argumentation modes. Students will read a variety of non-fiction as models for their writing. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring the skills necessary to pass the AP English Language and Composition exam, through which they may receive English credit at most colleges and universities.

    SPEECH/DEBATE

    Designed for college preparatory students or students with an interest in public speaking, this course includes training in public speaking and emphasizes an understanding of the elements of debate, the process of communicating effectively, the techniques involved in critical analysis, and constructive evaluation of one's own communications.
