Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students with academic and technical skills needed to succeed in future careers.  CTE empowers students to make meaningful career choices by providing opportunities for students to explore their interests while reinforcing academics. CTE introduces students to workplace competencies, hands-on learning and industry partner experiences.  Completing a CTE pathway is one way to engage with students who are focused on their future.

Roseville Joint Union High School District offers multiple Career Technical Education programs at all of our comprehensive and alternative education sites. Each comprehensive high school offers four to six programs of study. These programs cover industry sectors in Arts, Media, and Entertainment, Building and Construction Trades, Education, Child Development, and Family Services, Engineering and Architecture, Health Science and Medical Technology, Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation, Information and Communication Technology, Manufacturing and Product Development, Marketing, Sales, and Services, and Transportation. Additionally, Adelante High School hosts a Clinical Medical Assisting program and Automotive Services Technician program, which is open to eligible students from all RJUHSD schools. Independence High School, our independent study high school, offers CTE classes in Digital Animation, Professional Photography, and Robotics. In 2020-2021, despite the interruptions of the pandemic, RJUHSD had 401 students complete programs of study. In 2021-2022 we had 585 students enrolled in the capstone classes, resulting in more completers this year! Furthermore, RJUHSD offers a CTE internship program to place CTE students in local businesses to further develop the skills and knowledge they have learned in our programs.

Facts

On a State level:

1. The California Economy is experiencing a skills gap.  47% of jobs in California require skills training- more education than high school, but less than a four-year degree.  
2. Dual enrollment increases engagement and success.  Research shows that student outcomes vary substantially by state and often by income.
3. Despite the pandemic, the State of California's graduation rate for comprehensive high schools was 91.3% in 2021.   89% of California high school students participating in CTE programs graduated.  
4. In 2019-2020 there were 1,297,803 participants in career and technical education (CTE) in California.

On a National level:

1. 7.4 million secondary students and 4 million post-secondary students are interested in CTE nationwide
2. Between 2012 and 2022, there will be 50,557,900 job openings for CTE graduates
3. Of those jobs, 15,627,500 (30.9%) will be new
4. 82% of CTE students say they’re “satisfied” with career opportunities
5. 80% of CTE students say CTE classes helped them “know where they were headed”
6. 70% of CTE students say entering a CTE program of study helped them get better grades
7. 64.7% of post-secondary CTE students enroll in public two-year institutions
8. 45% of CTE students say it used real-world examples to help them understand classwork
9. In 48 states, high school graduate rates for CTE students are 3%-22% higher than state averages.
10. Students who engage in a rigorous course of academics combined with a Career Pathway have proven success in college and careers. 

 What is a CTE Pathway?

The State of California has identified 15 Industry Sectors.  RJUHSD offers pathways in eight of the fifteen sectors.  A pathway will offer an introductory course, a concentrator course, and a capstone course.

Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education 

Purpose:

To develop more fully the academic and career technical skills of secondary and post-secondary education students who elect to enroll in CTE programs.

• Guarantees modern, durable and rigorous CTE programs

• Expanded to include preparation for careers that require a baccalaureate and possibly a master’s degree
