    Definitions

    Education Code guiding our attendance procedures*:

    Compulsory Education- A pupil between aged of 6 and 18 who is not otherwise exempted shall attend school for the full time designed as the length of the school by the governing board [EC 48200].

     

    Chronic Absence- A pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the school days in the school year when the total number of the days the pupils is absent divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular day schools of the district, exclusive of Saturdays and Sundays [EC 60901c1].

     

    Truancy- A pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, shall be classified as a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district [EC 48260 a].

     

    Habitual Truant-A “habitual truant” is a pupil who has been reported as truant three or more times per school year. A pupil shall not be deemed a habitual truant unless there has been a conscientious effort to hold at least one conference with a parent or guardian of the pupil and the pupil himself [EC 48262]

    Chronic Truant- a “chronic truant” is a pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory education who is absent from school without a valid excuse for 10 percent or more of the school days in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date [EC 48263.6]
