Who are we?
To be on the team, competitors must be enrolled in the fall course, known as Speech and Debate 2 (In the spring, we become an after-school program). This class is designed to offer direct instruction in competitive speech and debate events. The variety of competition offerings allows for students with diverse interests/skills to discover the events with which they are compatible. Students who take Speech and Debate 2 enjoy performing. This course is devoted to competition preparation and is structured according to speaking events officially recognized by the National Speech & Debate Association. Students do extensive research and are required to attend and participate in events held outside of school hours. This course is offered to freshmen through seniors. The competitive season runs August to April, and for those competing at Nationals, to June. (S&D 2 satisfies UC/CSU g-elective)
For more information, contact the team's coach, Mrs. Elko.

Congratulations to Trinity McEwen for winning speaker of the tournament!
Our program received the National Speech & Debate Association's (NSDA) most prestigious honor, the Leading Chapter Award (2018-2019 season). This places us in the top 300 teams in more than 3000+ across the nation. Additionally, the team has earned a spot, once again, in the NSDA's distinguished "100 Club."
Congratulations to Josie DeMartino for winning speaker of the tournament!
October 12th marked our 2019-2020 season speech opener. With only a week after our debate opener, we worked extra hard to prepare our speeches to be tournament ready, and it showed. Competing against countless teams, we received 36 awards, and nearly 75% of the team broke to final rounds.
Congratulations to Nia Sanders for being this year's first speaker of the tournament!
September 21st marked the first tournament of the 2019-2020 competitive season at the Ponderosa High School debate opener.
