HISTORY: Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of our right to read. It began in the 1980's to advocate for the intellectual freedom of students. Librarians, authors, and booksellers alike promote the Library Bill of Rights and our right to read. (ALA)
American Library Association, Office of Intellectual Freedom defines banned vs. challenged:
A banning is the removal of challenged materials.
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group.
