Library FAQs????????????

  • Textbooks:

What do I need to check out a textbook?

You need your ID card, or you need to know your 6-digit student ID number.

When can I return my textbooks?

You can return your textbooks with your class, if your teacher signs up with the Library, or you can return your textbooks during regular library hours.

When is the last day that I can return textbooks during the school year?

The last day to return textbooks in the Fall is the day before Winter Break at 3 pm.  The last day to return textbooks in the Spring is the last day of school at 3 pm.

    Library Books:

What do I need to check out a book?

You need your ID card, or you need to know your 6-digit student ID number.  Your library account must be clear (no overdue books or fines).

How many books can I check out?

You can have up to 5 books checked out at a time.

How long can I keep the books I've checked out?

The loan period is 3 weeks. For your convenience, we stamp the due date on a slip at the front of the book. You are responsible for remembering to return your book, so take note!

What if I haven't finished my book by the time it's due?

You can renew your book for another 3 weeks, as long as there isn't a hold on the book.

    What is a "hold"?

When a student wants a book that is already checked out, we can put a "hold" on that book. This means that when the book is returned, we hold it for the student who requested it.

What happens if I return my book late?

There is an overdue fine of 5 cents per school day for late books. Be kind: return or renew on time!

When do I have to pay my fines?

When you have $2.00 or more in fines, you will have to pay them before checking out more books.

Where do I pay my fines?

If you have less than $2.00 in fines, then you can pay the librarian directly.  If you have more than $2.00 in fines, you will have to pay Mrs. Carroll in Student Services.  It may take 1-2 days to clear your fines after you pay Mrs. Carroll.

What happens if I REALLY, REALLY need to check out a book, but I have more than $2.00 in fines and I can't pay the fine yet?

You can visit our Read and Return shelf.  These books can be borrowed on the honor system and returned when you are done.

What happens if my book gets damaged while it's checked out to me?

You are responsible for keeping your book safe and sound. If it is damaged, you will be fined. Better to just take care of it, eh?

What's the big deal if I have an overdue book or fines?

Besides the racking guilt you'll feel, you won't be able to check out any more books until you clear your fines and return your overdue books. Fines and overdue books can also jeopardize your ability to participate in graduation activities.

What do I need to check out a computer?

You need your ID card (you'll catapult yourself to the front of the line!), or you'll need to know your 6-digit student ID number

Can I use a computer to check my email or surf the web?

Yes and no. Priority is given to students using the computers for school work. If all of the computers are being used and you are surfing, you may be asked to log off so another student can complete their school work. Otherwise, you're free to surf school-appropriate websites.

    What's a "school-appropriate" site?

Basically, if it's something you wouldn't want Mr. Becker to know you're looking at, it's not okay. Remember, you are using a school-owned computer in a public setting, so keep it rated PG. See the RJUHSD acceptable use policy for all of the juicy details.

Can I print a couple of pages?

Sure! You are welcome to use our black-and-white printer. It's 5 cents per page. Be sure to check out the "Print Preview" before you print to make sure you know how many pages you're sending to the printer.

Can I print a class set?

Sure, but please don't use the printer. If you need a class set, see a staff member and we can get you all set up with the copy machine instead.

Can I use your copy machine?

Yep! A member of our staff would be happy to make copies for you.Library materials (i.e., copies of articles out of library books) are free. Anything else is 5 cents per page.
